User Accounts at CHPC

Policies

All users are subject to the terms and conditions of the CHPC User Policies document. The latest version (2.5 of 5 March 2021) can be found here:

Note the following:

  • No guarantee of backups of /home owing to technical limitations.
  • No quotas are imposed on /mnt/lustre/users but there is a strict 90-day lifetime for files.
  • Quotas are imposed on /mnt/lustre/groups and a 365-day lifetime for files.
  • Access to /mnt/lustre/groups is by application only, and has a standard 1TB maximum quota per group, up to 10TB maximum for a group using the large queue. Any quota above 10TB is subject to a separate MoA between PI and CHPC.
  • New gpu_long queue.

Registration

In order to obtain access to the cluster registration as either a Principal Investigator (PI) or Normal User on the new CHPC User Database is required. It is further required from approved PI's to register a single Research Programme to which registered users can be added as members. Job submissions will draw from cpu hour allocations associated with the respective Research Programmes. Full details of these new procedures and steps to follow to get registered may be found at the following link to the user database: https://users.chpc.ac.za/.

Eligible Countries

Full time permanent staff members of an academic research institution in the following countries may apply on the CHPC user portal website to be a PI:

  • Republic of South Africa
  • Namibia
  • Botswana
  • Republic of Angola
  • Union of the Comoros
  • Democratic Republic of Congo
  • Kingdom of Eswatini
  • Ghana
  • Kenya
  • Kingdom of Lesotho
  • Madagascar
  • Malawi
  • Republic of Mauritius
  • Mozambique
  • Namibia
  • Seychelles
  • United Republic of Tanzania
  • Zambia
  • Zimbabwe

Priority projects:

The CHPC is mandated to support high priority and time-critical projects for weather and pandemic forecasting which need to be prioritised for usage of CHPC resources from time to time. In order to achieve timeous results for national decision-making, the termination of some running jobs may be required without prior warning when cluster usage is high.
