Login and password troubles

If you are having trouble logging into Lengau, it may be for the following reasons:

1. Account not created yet

The account creation process is triggered when a Principal Investigator adds a Candidate User to a Research Programme. However, at the CHPC end, human intervention is required to complete the process, and this may take up to 24 hours. If you have been added to a research programme within the preceding 24 hours but you are unable to log in, please wait a little longer. If you still cannot log in after the 24 hours have lapsed, please contact the CHPC Helpdesk.

2. Password locked due to too many failed login attempts

As a security measure to protect your data from malicious attacks, your account will be locked after 3 failed login attempts. The lock will be lifted after 30 minutes if there are no more login attempts, but it will be re-instated immediately if there is another failed attempt. Please type passwords very carefully, or, better still, use ssh keys.

If you believe that your login has been blocked due to this reason (most often caused by too many password mistakes), take the following actions:

  1. Wait 30 minutes, then try again.
  2. Try to log in through scp.chpc.ac.za, instead of lengau.chpc.ac.za. This will land you on the node login1 instead of login2, but either node can be used to submit jobs or edit files.
  3. If you still cannot login, change your cluster login password by first logging into the web-based user portal with your email address as login ID and the user portal password, which is not the same as the cluster login password, and then accessing the menu on the left of the screen. The web-based cluster password change utility may produce a spurious error, which can be ignored. Password change menu
  4. Now wait 30 minutes and try to log in again, preferably through the login node that you did not use on the previous login attempt.
  5. If this fails again, contact the CHPC helpdesk for further assistance. Please provide useful diagnostic information, such as the error message that you received when attempting to log in.

3. Network Problems

The CHPC does not normally ban specific networks. However, your service provider may block certain traffic. If you suspect that this is the case, try to test with a different network such as your cellphone network.
