User Accounts at CHPC

Policies

All users are subject to the terms and conditions of the CHPC User Policies document. The latest version (2.7 of 19 July 2024) can be found here:

Note the following:

  • We have had to reduce the allowed life time for all files on the Lustre file system to prevent it filling up.
  • Shared groups are now included: Files under /mnt/lustre/groups that have not been accessed for more than 90 days will be deleted.
  • All files older than 90 days under /mnt/lustre/users/ will be automatically deleted.

In compliance with the Protection of Personal Information Act (PoPIA) No. 4 of 2013, please read the CSIR's Privacy Notice and the Accounts Privacy Notice.

Please use our new logo when referencing the CHPC in slides, web sites, etc.

Registration

In order to obtain access to the cluster registration as either a Principal Investigator (PI) or Normal User on the new CHPC User Database is required. It is further required from approved PI's to register a single Research Programme to which registered users can be added as members. Job submissions will draw from cpu hour allocations associated with the respective Research Programmes. Full details of these new procedures and steps to follow to get registered may be found at the following link to the user database: https://users.chpc.ac.za/.

Procedure for Principal Investigators to add users under their Research Programme is as follows:

  1. Log onto the CHPC User Portal (https://users.chpc.ac.za)
  2. Navigate to the desired research programme (https://users.chpc.ac.za/programme/)
  3. Click on “Edit Programme”
  4. Select the name of the person you wish to add from the “person to add..” list
  5. Click on “Add person”
  6. Click on “Save”

Eligible Countries

Full time permanent staff members of an academic research institution in the following countries may apply on the CHPC user portal website to be a PI:

  • Republic of South Africa
  • Namibia
  • Botswana
  • Republic of Angola
  • Union of the Comoros
  • Democratic Republic of Congo
  • Kingdom of Eswatini
  • Ghana
  • Kenya
  • Kingdom of Lesotho
  • Madagascar
  • Malawi
  • Republic of Mauritius
  • Mozambique
  • Seychelles
  • United Republic of Tanzania
  • Zambia
  • Zimbabwe

Priority projects:

The CHPC is mandated to support high priority and time-critical projects for weather and pandemic forecasting which need to be prioritised for usage of CHPC resources from time to time. In order to achieve timeous results for national decision-making, the termination of some running jobs may be required without prior warning when cluster usage is high.
